He has painted, drawn and made sculptures for as long as he can remember. In recent years he has travelled widely and his current work has been painted in Nigeria, Cambodia and Switzerland as well as in England.
He obtained a degree at Brighton Art College and has worked as a designer, writer, gardener and teacher while continuing to paint, exhibit and sell work in Britain and abroad.
Joel has a fascination with colour and shape. Their relationships naturally led him towards flowers and fruit as subject matter. He has also risen to the challenge to extend the long traditions in figurative painting beyond the usual clichées and to say something new.
He often chooses a traditional subject as a starting point: a flower, fruit, the human form. By focusing on the abstract elements of colour and shapes, and their inter-relationships, he creates something different: 'the extraordinary out of the ordinary'.
His pictures are a means to share with others the wonder and pleasures of life.
He has completed a number of public and private commissions in a wide variety of media: oils, watercolours, prints, pastels and sculptures in wood, metal and ceramic.
2004: Joel has exhibited at the Horsebridge Art Centre in Whistable, Kent; the McIndoe Surgical Centre in East Grinstead and Atelier Bass in Zurich, Switzerland.
